Sree Sankara Vidyapeetom College, established half a century ago, pays homage to the illustrious Sree Shankaracharya, the great visionary. Nestled in the secluded, idyllic village of Irapuram, approximately thirty kilometres distant from the sprawling urbanity of Cochin, the institution draws its spiritual essence from the proximate birthplace of Adi Sankara, Kaladi. In this tranquil haven, far removed from the clamour of towns and traffic-choked highways, our campus emerges as an absolute sanctuary for education. Embellishing this sylvan expanse, the College commands a sprawling campus extending over eighteen acres of pristine terrain.

The Management of this venerable institution falls under the purview of The SREE SANKARA TRUST, a hallowed institution formed in 1965, with a resolute commitment to the dissemination of higher education, fervently in accord with the precepts upheld by the respected sage. This trust, held in custodial care by the Nambuthiris, the upholders of Kerala's venerable Brahminical tradition, known as Keraladwijas in the Sanskrit annals, encapsulates an authentic lineage steeped in the ethos of Vedic duty, scholarship, and pedagogical artistry. The abodes of the Namboothiri’s in Kerala's numerous villages, besides being conduits of Vedic knowledge, stood as sanctified sanctuaries of learning, disseminating knowledge spanning the domains of Ayurveda, Astrology, Architecture, Ethics, and Mathematics through the esteemed Gurukula system. Numerous volumes authored by the learned Nambuthiris, inscribed upon palm leaves, continue to be revered as fountains of wisdom in these domains, with many of these foundational works meticulously preserved within the hallowed vaults of the manuscript’s library in Trivandrum. It is this august heritage that catalysed our pioneering visionaries to contemplate the establishment of a trust, dedicated to the advancement of higher learning in the hallowed name of Adi Sankara, himself a great teacher and a Namboothiri.

As social reformers, the founders of the trust, under the unfaltering leadership of Sri. P.N. Namboodiri, a lifelong devotee of the Bharat Sevak Samaj, exhibited unwavering determination in selecting underprivileged and educationally deprived rural hinterlands as the crucible for their educational endeavours. The trust's two other esteemed institutions are similarly located in isolated, remote enclaves of rural Kerala. These endeavours underscore the unswerving commitment of our founders to the noble cause of rural enrichment.

A mere fifty years ago, Irapuram languished as a forsaken hamlet inhabited by toiling peasant folk and agricultural laborers, struggling for meagre subsistence. In this desolate landscape, the very notion of substantial developmental initiatives remained an elusive dream. The stark absence of viable transportation rendered centres of higher learning practically inaccessible to these rural residents. The inception of Sree Sankara Vidyapeetom College at Irapuram heralded a veritable revolution in the realm of higher education, simultaneously catalysing a multifaceted social reawakening. Five decades hence, while the region may persist in its state of industrial and economic dormancy, the presence of the College imbues it with an aura befitting the modern era.
